Uterine and Agnatic Lines

Most of my genetic material is inherited with equal probability from each of my great-great grandparents, but there are exceptions: The genes on my X chromosome come, with equal probability, from my maternal grandmother Edna Baker, and her mother-in-law, Rebecca Ann Norton. My Y chromosome is identical, except for mutations, with the Y chromosome of Reverend Robert Allen, born 1695 in Armagh, Ireland. And finally, my mitochondrial DNA is identical to that of Marit Olsson, born 1807 in Sweden.

Robert Allen is my father's father's father's father's father's father's father's father; and Marit Olsson is my mother's mother's mother's mother's mother. Long before mankind knew anything of DNA, the agnatic (pure male) and uterine (pure female) ancestries were given special significance. In most countries, surnames are inherited from the father, making the agnatic descent obvious and, seemingly, ``important.'' Yet, I do not find it surprising that the only one of my wife's great great grandparents whose name we know is her uterine ancestor.

Let's write same-sex descent as the term that embraces both uterine (mitochondrial) and agnatic (Y chromosome) descent. This webpage contains some example same-sex descents. By convention, the final link in a ``same-sex'' descent is allowed to be of the opposite sex.

I include four example uterine descents, and a large number of agnatic descents. Some of the latter comprise synopses of certain royal lineages. I make no attempt to list the agnatic descendants of the famous progenitors exhaustively, giving just one, or a few, of the major lines.

Example Uterine Lineages

All of the very long descents I've seen are agnatic, but if we consider only the descents from recent centuries, by far the longest same-sex descent known in my personal tree, is a uterine descent! As you see, this uterine lineage truncates nicely into my agnatic line:

The Royal Uterine Ancestry of Alexander Graham

I examined several uterine descents nearly as long as Eleanor Basset's, and show just a few here. I couldn't omit this one, where the spouses consist of three Kings to start, followed by ten other noblemen (a Duke, a Marquess, six Earls, a Justice/Sheriff, and even Patrick II Chaworth was Lord of Kidwillyin), followed by yet another King, then an Earl and a Lord.

The Royal Uterine Ancestry of Jean d'Avesnes

There are many other long uterine descents surmised about famous European medieval women. For my final example, I take a long descent which starts particularly early. It also is drenched in royal blood, including four Kings as husbands, two Dukes, and almost all the rest Counts. Probably some reader can use this as a base for building a much longer uterine descent.

The reason this Spencer line is so long is that it extends from antiquity all the way to the present time. The other long lines in my database stop centuries earlier, and might become the basis of very long agnatic lines if anyone can add to them.

Agnatic Descendants of Njord of Nortun

William the Conqueror, Robert the Bruce, and other British nobles are agnatic descendants of Vikings who trace their descent back to Njord of Nortun. This provides many long lineages including a 49-long agnatic connection from Njord to my ancestor Francis Bigod. I don't know how much of the early lineage is mythical, if any. The longest known line in this group leads to the Sinclairs of New Hampshire.

The first several generations are likely made up, but even if you subtract 24 generations and start with Eystein the Fart, these are mighty agnatic descents.

Agnatic Descendants of Clovis, King of Cologne

The agnatic line of Charlemagne is one of the most important in European genealogy. His pedigree is in dispute, but sometimes his agnatic ancestry is traced back to 3rd century relatives of the Merovingians.

Although many millions of Charlemagne's descendants are alive today, it seems that no one can claim agnatic descent from him, the last such descendant being an Earl of Ulster who died in the 14th century. As shown below, it seems that a somewhat later Duke of Savoy can claim descent from Charlemagne's 2nd cousin, Childebrand II.
