(Except for the first few generations, it isn't a very good way to
examine my pedigree, but my sense of whimsy couldn't resist
trying for the World's Largest Ahnenreihe.)
In the Ahnenreihe system, a single index number shows the position
of an ancestor on one's family tree. For example John Arterbury
(ancestor index 100) and Sarah Hill (index 101) are the parents
of my 3-great grandfather Elias Arterbury (index 50).
Writing Elias's index (50) in binary (110010) and reading from left
to right we see he is

Of course most calculaters `top out' at ten digits or so
and you'll have trouble decoding my exact relationship to
Pharoah Ramses I (ancestor index 334420534783472420138089785081984).
In some cases where sources conflict, two individuals are shown
with the same ancestral index.
The alternate will have the symbol `*A'
prefixed to the index, or
occasionally the symbol
`*B' or even
`*C' instead,
when there are two (or three) alternate trees with similar ancestral indices.
The ancestor of an alternate will have his/her index
prefixed `A'
(for a `*A' ancestor)
or prefixed `B'
(for a `*B' ancestor).
(There are several cases where unnamed or speculative generations
are collapsed into a single database node ``NN ... NN.''
These make the subsequent ancestor indices misleading.)
Due to software and presentation deficiencies the ahnenreihe
may be misleading in complex cases involving alternative
ancestors with more than one child.
Always use the Pedigree itself
for the most accurate rendition of the database.
