SCOTS, Kings of (chronological)
* The first King of
Scottish Dal Riata was
Fergus Mor mac Earca, d. ca 510,
but list makers usually begin with
Kenneth MacAlpin, also known
as 77th King of Picts, who unified Pictland and Scotland and
is generally considered to be First King of Scots.
Kenneth I was an agnatic descendant of Fergus Mor,
and uterine descendant of the Pictish Heiresses.
|
* The symbol ( * )
means the King is omitted from some regnal lists.

|
(28) | [1249-1286] | Alexander (Alasdair) III
|
* Alexander III's only heir
was a 3-year old granddaughter. This succession crisis was a partial
cause for
several Scottish and Irish nobles to sign
the Turnberry Band.
|
(*29) | [(1286-1290)] | Margaret
|
* Margaret, who never set foot in Scotland, d. at age 7 and the legitimate issue of William I became extinct.
A trial was held, supervised by King Edward I of England, and 14
candidates for the throne presented themselves:
- John Balliol, descendant of Henry Huntingdon
- Robert de Brus, descendant of Henry Huntingdon
- Edward I of England, descendant of King Malcolm III
- William de Ros, descendant of King William I's natural daughter
- Eric II of Norway, Queen Margaret's father
- Floris V of Holland, descendant of Henry Huntingdon
- Patrick Dunbar, descendant of King William I's natural daughter; also closest agnate of House of Dunkeld
- Patrick Galithly, descendant of William I's natural son
- Roger de Mandeville, descendant of William I's natural daughter
- Nicholas de Soules, descendant of Duncan I
- John Hastings, descendant of Henry Huntingdon
- William de Vesci, descendant of King William I's natural daughter
- John Comyn, descendant of King Donald III
- Robert de Pinkeney, descendant of Henry Huntingdon
Of these claims, only those of Baliol and Brus were really serious.
King Edward I used the crisis to increase his power in Scotland,
sided with the Baliol faction, and eventually claimed the throne for himself.
King John abdicated in 1296 and Edward I waged war with William Wallace for
control of Scotland.
We do not show all the Regents during this troubled period.
(Although English domination persisted until the 1314 Battle of Bannockburn,
and their claim was not formally renounced until 1328,
we do not show Edward's heirs in this list.)
|
(30) | [1292-1296] | John (Iain) Balliol
|
(*31) | [1296-1307] | Edward Longshanks King of England
|
(*,Guardian) | [1296-1298] | William (Uilleam) Wallace
(Sixteen other men were named Guardian of Scotland at some point during
that era. Click here for a list.)
|
(32) | [1306-1329] | Robert (Roibert) I the Bruce
|
(33) | [1329-1371] | David II
|
* The following King
was crowned with English assistance.
|
(*34,rival) | [1332-1336] | Edward Baliol
|
* After Edward,
there were no further efforts by the Baliol family or its
heirs to claim the crown, and it isn't clear who their rightful heir would be.
One theory makes The present Lord Hastings
the rightful genealogical heir to the thrones of Scotland and Alfred the Great,
tracing descent through King John's (oldest?) sister Cecily, another
three uterine generations, through Lords Morley,
and then following the inheritance of the Hastings Lordship.
|
(35) | [1371-1390] | Robert (Roibert) II
|
(36) | [1390-1406] | Robert (Roibert) III (born John)
|
* With Robert III infirm,
and then the young James I in English prison, Robert III's brother Robert
of Albany was de facto Ruler.
|

|
(37) | [1406-1437] | James (Seumas) I
|
(*Regent) | [1420-1424] | Murdoch Stewart of Albany

|
(Regent) | [1554-1560] | Mary of Guise
|
(42) | [1542-1567] | Mary (Mairi) I
|
* Mary spent most of her reign
in English prison, so some of her relatives served as Regents.
|
(43) | [1567-1625] | James (Seumas) VI (James I of England from 1603)
|
(44) | [1625-1649] | Charles (Turlough) I
|
(*) | [1649-1660] | Era of Cromwell
|
(45) | [1660-1685] | Charles (Turlough) II
|
(46) | [1685-1688] | James (Seumas) VII, II of England
|
* In 1688 the Stuart dynasty was overthrown in the ``Glorious Revolution.''
Refer to my List of Kings of England
for subsequent Kings in Britain.
The list here continues with the ``legitimate heirs'' of the Scottish
crown as recognized by Jacobites.
