The PEDIGREE of
Henry I BEAUCLERC (King) of ENGLAND

Note: William the Conqueror split his Kingdom between sons William (England) and Robert (Normandy) leaving no land to Henry. Henry schemed and, with Robert on crusade, seized throne upon the death of William II in a hunting `accident.' Later, Henry defeated and imprisoned his brother Robert.
Most of Henry's children were illegitimate so Mathilda, young widow of German Emperor, was his only legitimate heir. He arranged her marriage to Geoffrey Plantagenet, establishing a large empire, but soon went to war with his son-in-law. On Henry's death the throne was usurped by his nephew, Stephen of Blois.
One of England's most capable Kings, ruled with a combination of generosity and violence, acquiring the nickname Lion of Justice. `Beauclerc' means `fine scholar.'
