The PEDIGREE of
Viking dye-moss (lichen)

(in a commercially important group of lichens wide-spread in N.W. Europe; mycobiont of old Viking lichen is prob. Lecanora tartarea; here we show the mycobiont as 'father', phycobiont as 'mother')

Note: The special properties of lichen symbionts means many can live in extreme habitats (they've even survived outer space). There are many forms of lichen symbioses (including single lichens with both Cyanobacterium and Chlorophyte as phycobionts). Some lichens have Basidiomycete as mycobiont instead of Ascomycete.
