    Note: Vizier and de-facto ruler of Egypt, proclaimed Sultan 1174, declared independence from Seljuk empire, conquered much of North Africa and southern Arabia, assumed control of Syria, defeated by Baldwin IV at Battle of Montgisard 1177, waged war, destroyed Crusader Army at Battle of Hattin 4 July 1187, captured Jerusalem prompting Third Crusade, showed amazing chivalry, replacing Richard Lion-Hearted's horse when it fell. Crusade concluded by the Treaty of Ramla 1192 with Saladin permitting Christian pilgrimages to Jerusalem
