Star Voyage I


We imagine a starship leaving from Antares (Alpha Scorpii), making a straight line toward the Pleiades cluster (specifically the star Taygeta, in Taurus).

Following is a list of some of the stars encountered.

Each star is shown with three coordinates which define its position. z is the point along the line of travel where the star is closest. z defines a plane; within that plane the star's coordinates are given in polar coordinates, r (distance from the line), theta (angle w/r Sol's projection to that plane). The star's highest brightness rank is shown if it was ever one of the brightest stars in the sky along the route), along with a 'c' if the star was ever closest. The fional columns show the star's absolute magnitude and spectral class.

All distances are in light-years. Only stars in the HYG catalog are eligible. (Note that 20Sig_Sco was never -5.5 magnitude along the journey, indeed was never higher than rank 6. The high magnitude is achieved 144 light-years in the opposite direction: for consistency, such a star is shown with negative z.)

Here is a journey between the large blue stars Beta Crucis (Mimosa) and Gamma Cassiopeiae (Cih). It is interesting because it passes close to Sol. I've hand-picked which stars to show, though I think I've left in all the -2 magnitudes and brightest stars. I've included several close neighbors of Sol.
