[The early Scots-Irish settlers of America] were a hardy, brave, hot-headed race, excitable in temper, unrestrainable in passion, invincible in prejudice. Their hand opened as impetuously to a friend as it clinched against an enemy. They loathed the Pope as sincerely as they venerated Calvin and Knox; and they did not particularly respect the Quakers. If often rude and lawless it was partly the fault of their position. They hated the Indian while they despised him, and it does not seem, in their dealings with this race, as though there were any sentiments of honor or magnanimity in their bosoms that could hold way against the furious tide of passionate, blind resentment. Impatient of restraint, rebellious against everything that in their eyes bore the semblance of injustice, we find these men readiest among the ready on the battle-fields of the Revolution. If they had faults, a lack of patriotism or of courage was not among the number.
-- Winthrop Sargent
My Allen ancestors were Presbyterian Scots-Irish who immigrated from Ulster to the American mid-Atlantic in the 1730's. In addition to my own relations, I've accumulated lists of Allens with similar migrations, hoping that eventually a connection may be established.
There are several descendancy charts at this website, compiled into three pages:
This page -- ``My'' Allens and possible relatives:
Let me stress again that all these pages, and especially this one, are unresearched by me, and simply a compendium of Internet sources.

A big Thank you to everyone who provided this information, including Wanda Smith Ballard, Joyce Selix (blucricket@humboldt.net), Bill and Loydean Allen, Phyllis Ewer, Chuck Allen, Kathleen McCraw, Jean Brite, the Kentucky Biographies Project and many others.
The only real clue I have about Allans before Robert is my own DNA (Y-chromosome) test. But there is a big hint about Deborah Montgomery, in the will of Thomas Montgomery (d. 1766 in Philadelphia):
From the will abstracts from Philadelphia (see the GenWeb Archives) MONTGOMERY, THOMAS. City of Phila. Merchant. March 1, 1766. June 23, 1766. Children: Susannah, Elenor, Robert. Nephews: Thomas Montgomery, Robert Allen. Exec.: Robert Montgomery. Wit: Danl. McLonen, Wm. Johnson, Alexander Harvey, Thomas Dunn. N.527.(From other sources we deduce nephew Thomas Montgomery was son of (deceased) brother Valentine. Robert Allen is, I think, son of Deborah Montgomery.
From Wanda Ballard's summary:-- ``Two brothers, Robert and John Allen, came to America from Armagh, Ireland, in 1736. Shortly before they left Ireland an older brother, James Allen, had been killed in an uprising against England. They landed at Philadelphia and lived for two years in Chester County, PA. Robert later settled in Frederick County, VA and John in Albemarle County, VA.''
(For more information on Robert Allan (1695 - 1769) of Armagh, Go to his biography.) The mother of Robert's first four sons was Deborah Montgomery. (Some sources show a daughter who precedes the marriage to Deborah. I conjecture she may have been instead a niece but show her simply as a daughter of Deborah in the Chart.) John, Thomas, Robert (Jr.) and David had a younger sister Rebecca, who married one John Givens (Jr.?) who has never been clearly identified. (My conjecture is shown in the Givens Chart.)
After Deborah's early death, Robert married Samuel Givens' widow Sarah. They had one child, Benjamin. I've noticed many 'Net sources pointing to Benjamin (more than for the other four sons put together!) but I've not pursued them (though I hope to add all agnatic descendants to this webpage) -- do any of these descendants show up in early Putnam, Monroe or Ripley counties?
Robert Allan had five sons and two daughters. He had twenty-three grandsons who bore the Allen surname:
Three of Robert Allan's sons are shown as Army officers.
You will note many family intermarriages. Not only among Allen-Givens, but also Allen-Allen, Allen-Hornsby (Four of Robert Allan's grandchildren married Hornsbys) Allen-Sharp, and Allen-Taylor.
The spellings ``Allan'' and ``Allen'' are both seen for those born in Ireland, with the former disappearing in America. Other spellings, like ``Allin'' or ``Allyn,'' also occur.
Studying the descendants of Robert Allan, I find six instances in the early generations where we know the names of a man's father, father-in-law and his first three sons in order. In each of those cases the oldest son was named after one of his grandfathers. (Three were named after paternal grandfather, three after maternal.) In four of the six cases, the second son was named after the other grandfather; in the other two a third or fourth son was named after that grandfather. Of the six cases there were four where father's name differed from both grandfathers; in each of those four, the third or subsequent son was named after the father.
Daughters followed a similar pattern. Three of Deborah Montgomery's sons named their first daughter Deborah; the fourth shows a single daughter named after her maternal grandmother.
The naming pattern might be a useful clue in ``filling in some of the blanks'' but I've yet been unable to apply it. For example, James Allen (1785-1837) (3) did not name a son after his father-in-law Richard, instead choosing as names John Godfrey, Harrison, Hiram. We don't know the fathers of Robert Allan and Deborah Montgomery (although some say Robert's father was James); if the naming pattern is followed for their children, the fathers might be John Allan and Thomas Montgomery. (Thomas Allan is less likely since no brothers or nephews of Robert Allan have turned up with the name Thomas.)
With a few exceptions, I follow only sons, not daughters. (One exception is that I show all the owners of Allen Dale Farm near Shelbyville. It is still owned by a descendant of Major John Allen (Susanne M. Van Stockum nee de Charette, my 5th cousin once removed).
I don't regard the Allen daughters as ``less important'' than the Allen sons, but the decision to limit the list to ``agnatic'' (patrilineal) descendants was motivated by practical factors:
At last count I show 7 children of Robert Allan, 48 agnatic grandchildren, 130 agnatic great-grandchildren, 158 agnatic 2-great grandchildren, 87 agnatic 3-great grandchildren, 61 agnatic 4-great grandchildren, with most 5-great grandchildren suppressed for privacy.
The notation in this table should be self-explanatory. When a man has children by two wives I assign two index numbers to him. When descent is recorded from James(?) Allan or Samuel Givens in more than one way, two (or more) family/descendancy indexes are shown.
I use a common numbering for both this Allen Descendancy Chart and the Givens chart..

| | According to some WorldConnect Gedcoms
this man was a son (James, christ. 1658, or Robert, christ. 1656)
of Henry (Henrie) Allan (b. ca 1626 Glasgow)
and Christian Knox.
Unfortunately some such GedComs are notoriously unreliable,
and I have not yet seen any supporting evidence.
| An argument against this Henry Allan connection is that, although Scotsmen usually named a son after his grandfather, none of the sons attributed to 1 are named Henry. (Of course there could have been a Henry who died young.) By a similar argument, the idea that the father of Robert Allan (1.1) was named James or Robert may be suspect: Robert's first two sons were John and Thomas. There is some circumstantial supporting evidence: the sons attributed to Henry Allan, besides a Henry, include Thomas, Robert, James -- precisely the names used in our family. Also, if the Henry connection is correct, the early James Allen, Quaker immigrant to Chester Co. Penns. is a cousin of 1.1. This might explain why our Allen family immigrated first to Chester County.

| Albemarle Co., Virg. ? ; -
| Mary Crook
| | LDS shows John Allen (b. 1707)
and Mary Crook, both of Yorkshire, married 1732, with daughter
Elizabeth of Albemarle County.
While other sources do not show dates or give Mary's maiden name,
I assume this is the same John and Mary, since 1.5 has
a grandson with ``Crook'' as a middle name.
| But the Scots-Irish brother of Robert Allan probably wasn't born in Yorkshire! Perhaps the Yorkshire showings are completely wrong, or perhaps 1.5 married a Yorkshire woman. Perhaps another possibility is that 1.1.5's father-in-law (1.5) is an unrelated Yorkshire man, with the ``cousin'' designation just an old error. | James (1.4) and John (1.5) Allan
are the only siblings of Robert Allan mentioned in biographies I've seen.
The other siblings show up on an Internet GedCom but may be unreliable.

However, she apparently named her second son ``Robert''

inference is her father was a Robert.

married another John Givens.
She was apparently widow of a Long, adding further surname confusion.
| Her birthplace isn't shown, but presumably she emigrated from Armagh to, eventually, Frederick Co. as a young child; later moved, after the death of her father, ca 1749 with her mother and siblings to Rowan Co., NC where John and Edward Givens were living. (same county where Robert 1.1 and John 1.5 Allan first settled)
and moved several years later to Fayette Co.
David is shown by one site at WorldConnect as having brother William.
| David Allen is also a possible nephew, again just based on the migration Eire to Chester Co. at about the same time as Robert Allan. Also, wife's Scottish birth shows this family was Scots-Irish, not Irish. As shown on these pages, there were several Irish Allens who showed up in Chester County about this time, probably not all related.

| Three very large lists of descendants of Robert and Deborah Russell may be found at WorldConnect via Laura W. Steneck (clwlass@mindspring.com), via Diana Shepard (ShepardDi@aol.com) and via William LaBach (wmlabach1@home.com). Robert and Deborah Russell had a son Thomas Allen Russell (1794 - 1846) who married Anne Mastin Allen, and a daughter Rebecca Williamson Russell (1798 - 1850) who married Thomas Millar Allen (1797 - 1871). The resultant surname evolution Allen --> Russell --> Allen caused me confusion when I encountered the following note: ``A Thomas M. Allen shows up, living in Fayette Co., Kentucky and later in Boone Co., Missouri, whose sister was `Mrs. Russel' but he was alive in 1833. (He was Elder of Church of Christ. Christian Messenger placed `genealogical tidbits' on-line.)'' The same note mentioned General Russel. 1.1.3.1 is a ``Mrs. Russell'' with a brother Thomas Allen, but the dates didn't match up. However, now we can deduce `Mrs. Russel' was Anne Mastin Allen! Recently John M. | Based on very fragmentary data, the following AT might be guessed for this James Allen: 1. James Allen; 2. prob. Thomas Allin; 3. poss. Margery Bryan; 4. prob. John Allin; 5. poss. Sarah Bryan; 10. John Bryan b. 9 Apr 1730, Shenandoah Co. Virg. John Bryan has a pedigree shown at Ancestry.com WorldTree which shows descent from Ireland and France via Denmark. If so, he is not the only relative from North Carolina branch that later met up with Kentucky branch in Putnam or Monroe County, Indiana. There was also a Daniel Allen born in Rowan Co., NC about the same time as this 4. John Allin. The AT of Delilah Wright is allegedly: 1. Delilah Wright (b. 20 May 1782; d. 15 July 1869) 2. Richard Wright, Jr. (4 July 1757 - 12 May 1833) 3. Nancy/Mary Morgan (1760-1798) 4. Richard Wright (1730 - 3 Sept 1784) 5. Elizabeth `Jane' Ann Morgan (1732-1795 | A very large genealogy showing

There is a household, James and Rosilla Allen, in the 1850 Ripley Co. census; see 4.2.2. The idea that 1.1.2.2.1 is one of the Ripley Co. Allens has another supporting hint: Wilford Allen of Ripley had a son James W. Allen. (In neither case do we know yet what the ``W.'' stands for.) Two Covingtons appear in 1820 and 1830 Indiana census, both in Dearborn County (which is adjacent to Ripley Co). Thomas C. Covington (b. 1787 Somerset, MD) m. Polly Nichols in 1819. Robert E. Covington (b. 1789 Cumberland Co., PA) m. Mary Fulton in 1819. (By 1830 Robert was apparently dead, Mary appearing in census.) Note that the grandmother of 1.1.2.2.1 was raised in Cumberland County. There were seventeen Covington households in the 1820 Kentucky census. Help! Help! How will we find Rosilini? 1.1.2.2.2

| | The following persons (cousins?) are
likely related. Where do they fit in?
Burl was definitely son of Sarah Allen, who appears as head of household
in 1820 Ripley census (and dies ca 1822).
Wilford is probably Burl's brother.
| In the 1840 census, James (tentatively called 4.2.2) is adjacent to Montgomery (4.1.1) with Merit (4.2.1) four lines below. Wilford was three pages earlier. In the 1850 census, James and Rosilla are on page 234 along with a John Allen household. Merit, Montgomery and Burrill are all on page 233. 4.1.1 | (perhaps 1.1.2.5.1 above) Montgomery Allen | Bracken Co., Ky. ? ; 14 Jan 1793 (or '90)

census as 45-year old laborer unable to read and write.
Other spelling variations include Burrel, Burrill, Burval.
| Adamson is a relatively uncommon surname. In the 1810 census there is no Adamson in Virginia, and in Kentucky only Mason Co. has Adamson households. (Parts of Bracken Co. were formerly in Mason Co.) 4.3.2

| Florence (Flora B.?) Allen | - ; - | - ; -
| Ed Jackson
| | Judith Hesselberth shows Florence
marrying Ed Jackson.
This is surely correct: she even has photographs.
| Another source shows Flora B. Allen (dau of 4.1.1.3) marrying Stephen Douglas Jackson 26 Sep 1876. Yet another source shows a Stephen Douglas Jackson (1872 - 1965) of Louisiana marrying a Flora B. Allen (1876 - 1969) with Flora's birthdate same as marriage date above! Thus, the connection from S.D. Jackson's Flora B. to our Allens appears likely to be an error based on similarity of names. 4.1.1.3.5

| Tenth Generation 6-Great Grandchildren of Robert Allan
| | To avoid compromising their privacy,
I provide few or no details of living individuals,
and thus make no attempt to continue this list
to the tenth generation or beyond.
| My name's no secret, so I'll create an entry for me: 1.1.2.5.7.1.1.2.1.2 | 1.1.4.1.7.1.1.2.1.2 James Dow Allen, III | ``So long ago I don't remember.''
| ``I never plan that far ahead.'' | Mommy Bear,
the most wonderful wife and mother in the world.
|
| Eleventh Generation 7-Great Grandchildren of Robert Allan
| | ... And I cannot resist boasting
that Robert Allan and Deborah Montgomery have at least one
7-great grandson of purely agnatic descent.

I searched at some genealogical indexes for last name `Allen', middle name `Dow'. Five 19th-century individuals turned up, including the Edwin Dow Allen shown as 5 in the main table above. The other four? Though they appeared unrelated to each other (or to me) all four were named ``Lorenzo Dow Allen.'' Two of the four had maternal grandfathers also forenamed ``Lorenzo Dow.'' (Later I read that 20,000 children were named after Lorenzo Dow (1777 - 1834), a famous Methodist evangelist in the South.)
Here are some other Allens likely to be related:
