[The early Scots-Irish settlers of America] were a hardy, brave, hot-headed race, excitable in temper, unrestrainable in passion, invincible in prejudice. Their hand opened as impetuously to a friend as it clinched against an enemy. They loathed the Pope as sincerely as they venerated Calvin and Knox; and they did not particularly respect the Quakers. If often rude and lawless it was partly the fault of their position. They hated the Indian while they despised him, and it does not seem, in their dealings with this race, as though there were any sentiments of honor or magnanimity in their bosoms that could hold way against the furious tide of passionate, blind resentment. Impatient of restraint, rebellious against everything that in their eyes bore the semblance of injustice, we find these men readiest among the ready on the battle-fields of the Revolution. If they had faults, a lack of patriotism or of courage was not among the number.

Agnatic Descendants of Robert Allan (1695 - 1769) and his siblings.

My Allen ancestors were Presbyterian Scots-Irish who immigrated from Ulster to the American mid-Atlantic in the 1730's. In addition to my own relations, I've accumulated lists of Allens with similar migrations, hoping that eventually a connection may be established.

There are several descendancy charts at this website, compiled into three pages:

This page -- ``My'' Allens and possible relatives:

Other Allen chart:

Let me stress again that all these pages, and especially this one, are unresearched by me, and simply a compendium of Internet sources.

Montgomery Family

The only real clue I have about Allans before Robert is my own DNA (Y-chromosome) test. But there is a big hint about Deborah Montgomery, in the will of Thomas Montgomery (d. 1766 in Philadelphia):

From the will abstracts from Philadelphia (see the GenWeb Archives) MONTGOMERY, THOMAS. City of Phila. Merchant. March 1, 1766. June 23, 1766. Children: Susannah, Elenor, Robert. Nephews: Thomas Montgomery, Robert Allen. Exec.: Robert Montgomery. Wit: Danl. McLonen, Wm. Johnson, Alexander Harvey, Thomas Dunn. N.527.
(From other sources we deduce nephew Thomas Montgomery was son of (deceased) brother Valentine. Robert Allen is, I think, son of Deborah Montgomery.

Summary of first generations

From Wanda Ballard's summary:-- ``Two brothers, Robert and John Allen, came to America from Armagh, Ireland, in 1736. Shortly before they left Ireland an older brother, James Allen, had been killed in an uprising against England. They landed at Philadelphia and lived for two years in Chester County, PA. Robert later settled in Frederick County, VA and John in Albemarle County, VA.''

(For more information on Robert Allan (1695 - 1769) of Armagh, Go to his biography.) The mother of Robert's first four sons was Deborah Montgomery. (Some sources show a daughter who precedes the marriage to Deborah. I conjecture she may have been instead a niece but show her simply as a daughter of Deborah in the Chart.) John, Thomas, Robert (Jr.) and David had a younger sister Rebecca, who married one John Givens (Jr.?) who has never been clearly identified. (My conjecture is shown in the Givens Chart.)

After Deborah's early death, Robert married Samuel Givens' widow Sarah. They had one child, Benjamin. I've noticed many 'Net sources pointing to Benjamin (more than for the other four sons put together!) but I've not pursued them (though I hope to add all agnatic descendants to this webpage) -- do any of these descendants show up in early Putnam, Monroe or Ripley counties?

Robert Allan had five sons and two daughters. He had twenty-three grandsons who bore the Allen surname:

Three of Robert Allan's sons are shown as Army officers.

Intermarriages

You will note many family intermarriages. Not only among Allen-Givens, but also Allen-Allen, Allen-Hornsby (Four of Robert Allan's grandchildren married Hornsbys) Allen-Sharp, and Allen-Taylor.

Spelling of ``Allen''

The spellings ``Allan'' and ``Allen'' are both seen for those born in Ireland, with the former disappearing in America. Other spellings, like ``Allin'' or ``Allyn,'' also occur.

Naming Pattern

Studying the descendants of Robert Allan, I find six instances in the early generations where we know the names of a man's father, father-in-law and his first three sons in order. In each of those cases the oldest son was named after one of his grandfathers. (Three were named after paternal grandfather, three after maternal.) In four of the six cases, the second son was named after the other grandfather; in the other two a third or fourth son was named after that grandfather. Of the six cases there were four where father's name differed from both grandfathers; in each of those four, the third or subsequent son was named after the father.

Daughters followed a similar pattern. Three of Deborah Montgomery's sons named their first daughter Deborah; the fourth shows a single daughter named after her maternal grandmother.

The naming pattern might be a useful clue in ``filling in some of the blanks'' but I've yet been unable to apply it. For example, James Allen (1785-1837) (3) did not name a son after his father-in-law Richard, instead choosing as names John Godfrey, Harrison, Hiram. We don't know the fathers of Robert Allan and Deborah Montgomery (although some say Robert's father was James); if the naming pattern is followed for their children, the fathers might be John Allan and Thomas Montgomery. (Thomas Allan is less likely since no brothers or nephews of Robert Allan have turned up with the name Thomas.)

Agnatic Descendants

With a few exceptions, I follow only sons, not daughters. (One exception is that I show all the owners of Allen Dale Farm near Shelbyville. It is still owned by a descendant of Major John Allen (Susanne M. Van Stockum nee de Charette, my 5th cousin once removed).

I don't regard the Allen daughters as ``less important'' than the Allen sons, but the decision to limit the list to ``agnatic'' (patrilineal) descendants was motivated by practical factors:

I do try to note the name of the husband for the ALLEN daughters, and indicate websites where their descendants may be listed.

Number of Agnatic Descendants

At last count I show 7 children of Robert Allan, 48 agnatic grandchildren, 130 agnatic great-grandchildren, 158 agnatic 2-great grandchildren, 87 agnatic 3-great grandchildren, 61 agnatic 4-great grandchildren, with most 5-great grandchildren suppressed for privacy.

A List of the Agnatic Descendants
of
James (?)  Allan
(b. Scotland ca 1650)

(Armagh --> Virginia --> Kentucky --> Indiana --> Kansas)

The notation in this table should be self-explanatory. When a man has children by two wives I assign two index numbers to him. When descent is recorded from James(?) Allan or Samuel Givens in more than one way, two (or more) family/descendancy indexes are shown.

I use a common numbering for both this Allen Descendancy Chart and the Givens chart..

First Generation

1 poss. James (or James Robert) Allan Scotland ; circa 1650 Ireland ; poss. killed in a religious war -
According to some WorldConnect Gedcoms this man was a son (James, christ. 1658, or Robert, christ. 1656) of Henry (Henrie) Allan (b. ca 1626 Glasgow) and Christian Knox. Unfortunately some such GedComs are notoriously unreliable, and I have not yet seen any supporting evidence.
An argument against this Henry Allan connection is that, although Scotsmen usually named a son after his grandfather, none of the sons attributed to 1 are named Henry. (Of course there could have been a Henry who died young.) By a similar argument, the idea that the father of Robert Allan (1.1) was named James or Robert may be suspect: Robert's first two sons were John and Thomas.
There is some circumstantial supporting evidence: the sons attributed to Henry Allan, besides a Henry, include Thomas, Robert, James -- precisely the names used in our family. Also, if the Henry connection is correct, the early James Allen, Quaker immigrant to Chester Co. Penns. is a cousin of 1.1. This might explain why our Allen family immigrated first to Chester County.

Second Generation
My Early Scots-Irish Immigrant Ancestors

1.1 Robert Allan Armagh, Eire ; 1695 Frederick Co., Virg. ; 1769 Deborah Montgomery (Antrim/Armagh 1705-1742? Virg.; m. 1730)
... widow married widower
1.2 Robert Allan Armagh, Eire ; 1695 Frederick Co., Virg. ; 1769 (Martha) Sarah Cathey (m. 1744) dau of Alexander Cathey (of Monaghan); widow of Samuel Givens
1.3 Ruth Allan Armagh, Eire ; - Rowan Co., N.C. ? ; after 1749 Thomas Brown (? - ca 1749 Frederick Co.)
1.4 James Allan, (Jr.?) Armagh, Eire (some say Scotland) ; - Eire (k. by English); ca 1735 NN (emigrated to America with the brothers of her deceased husband.)
Could this James Allen be the same as 7 on the Other Allen chart? Both James Allen's had descendants who travelled to Shelby Co., KY via Virginia.
1.5 John Allan Armagh, Eire ; poss. 1707 Albemarle Co., Virg. ? ; - Mary Crook
LDS shows John Allen (b. 1707) and Mary Crook, both of Yorkshire, married 1732, with daughter Elizabeth of Albemarle County. While other sources do not show dates or give Mary's maiden name, I assume this is the same John and Mary, since 1.5 has a grandson with ``Crook'' as a middle name.
But the Scots-Irish brother of Robert Allan probably wasn't born in Yorkshire! Perhaps the Yorkshire showings are completely wrong, or perhaps 1.5 married a Yorkshire woman. Perhaps another possibility is that 1.1.5's father-in-law (1.5) is an unrelated Yorkshire man, with the ``cousin'' designation just an old error.
James (1.4) and John (1.5) Allan are the only siblings of Robert Allan mentioned in biographies I've seen. The other siblings show up on an Internet GedCom but may be unreliable.
1.6 Benjamin Allan Armagh, Eire ; - poss. Frederick Co., Virg. ; - -
1.7 Mary Allan Armagh, Eire ; - poss. Frederick Co., Virg. ; - prob. William Reed (1695-1749), b. Armagh

Third Generation
Children of Robert Allan and Deborah Montgomery

1.1.1 Martha Allen Armagh, Eire ; 1727 (or 1731) - ; 11 Apr 1803 James Givens (1723-1790?) (2.1.3)
Martha is missing from many lists of Deborah Montgomery's children, and may have been born before Deborah's marriage. Perhaps she was a niece or step-daughter of 1.1. However, she apparently named her second son ``Robert'' (first son was ``Samuel'' after her father-in-law) so the inference is her father was a Robert.
1.1.2 John Allen (Major in War of 1776) Armagh, Eire ; 1732 Kernstown, Frederick Co., Virg. ; 2 Jul 1794 Anne Pollock (Polk; Polick), (1743 - 6 Feb 1805; m. 1760)
Anne Pollok (shown by Rex McLaurin as Mary Ann), b. Cumberland, Penns. (or Coleraine, Eire), d. Shelby, Ky., was the daughter of Dr. Thomas Pollok (1690-1760) of Eire, and, probably, Mary Ann Cochrane. This connection, if true, is my strongest link to royalty. The Pedigree of Mary Cochrane shows her as a descendant of Robert III, King of Scots and, possibly, Edward III, King of England.
1.1.3 Thomas Allen Armagh, Eire ; 1734 Warren Co., Virg. ; 1822 Abigail Miller (Millar) (m. 1765)
Abigail Miller was daughter of William Millar (of German ancestry) and Catherine Dubois, Catherine perhaps daughter of Isaac and Rachel.
Many sources show 1.1.3 as a Colonel during the War of 1776 (and decorated for gallantry), but in NSDAR records he seems to be shown as Private.
Some sources show Abigail Miller with "Montgomery" middle name.
1.1.4 Robert Allen, Jr. (Private in War of 1776) Armagh, Eire ; 1736 Kernstown, Frederick Co., Virg. ; 15 Nov 1791 Martha Roberts
Rex McLaurin shows Martha as ``Martha Allen Shelby.'' (Did she marry Shelby as a widow?)

After the death of his brother David (1.1.5), Robert became guardian of three of David's children: James (1.1.5.3), Mary (1.1.5.6), and David (1.1.5.7).

1.1.5 David Allen (Corporal in War of 1776) Winchester, Frederick Co. Virg. ; 1738 Albemarle Co., Virg. ; 1779 Elizabeth Allen (m. 1764), b. 1742 Albemarle, Virg. (1.5.1)
David lived near Thomas Jefferson and signed a copy of the Declaration of Independence with him. He was a manufacturer of cutlery. (His death date is sometimes shown as 1783 or 1789.) His will synopsis is:
To wife, Elizabeth; to children; to wife's mother, Mary Allen; to son, Robert, infant, £5 in lieu of a horse left him by his grandfather, Robert Allen; to son, John Crooks Allen, infant, to sons, James and David, infants, to daughter Mary, infant; to son James Joseph Allen, infant. Executors, brothers John Allen, in Frederick County, and Thomas Allen of Shanando
1.1.6 Rebecca Allen Frederick Co., Virg. ; 1740 Shelby Co., Ky. ; - John Givens, Jr. (poss. 2.3.1 or 2.1.1)
Child of Robert Allan and Sarah Cathey
1.2.1 Benjamin Allen Frederick Co., Virg. ; 1745 Casey Co., Kentucky ; 13 Jan 1826 Margaret Green Wohoad (Walkup; Wauchope; Wahaub; d. 1830+)
Nieces and Nephews of Robert Allan
1.3.1 Rebecca Rachel Brown - ; 1731 Lincoln Co., Ky ; after 1799 Long and John Givens (2.2.1)
Rebecca Brown causes confusion in the sources. One reason is that her putative cousin Rebecca Allen married another John Givens. She was apparently widow of a Long, adding further surname confusion.
Her birthplace isn't shown, but presumably she emigrated from Armagh to, eventually, Frederick Co. as a young child; later moved, after the death of her father, ca 1749 with her mother and siblings to Rowan Co., NC where John and Edward Givens were living.
Some show 1.3.1 as daughter of William Brown and Elizabeth Long (Elizabeth the daughter of James Long and Elizabeth).
1.4.1 James Allen, II Eire ; ca 1720 Nelson Co., KY ; 4 Jan 1811 Mary Kelsay (? - 1808)
Mary Kelsay (Kelsey) (b. York, Penns., d. 14 May 1808 Nelson, Ky.), was daughter of John Kelsay (born 1711 Eire, son of William) and (prob.) Margaret Campbell.
He was a strict Presbyterian.
Here's a Biography of James Allen II. Here's how I discovered his relationship to Robert Allan.
1.5.1 Elizabeth Allen Albemarle Co., Virg. ; 1744 Green Co., Ky. ; 1798 David Allen (1.1.5)
Possible Nephews of Robert Allan
There is no direct evidence these are nephews except similarity of places and dates.
Other possible nephews are individuals 7.1-2 and 11 on the Other Allen chart.
poss. 1.5.X James Allen - ; ca 1740 - ; 1792 Rebecca Miller
James' father is shown as John Allen. The migration Armagh to Pennsylvania is suggestive of our Allens.
Rebecca Miller (b. 13 Oct 1742; m. 1767 Chester Co., Penns.) was daughter of Robert Miller (1703 - 1761) and Ruth Haines. Robert Miller was son of Gayen Miller (Armagh 1674 - 1742 Penns) and Margaret Henderson.
grandfather of 3 poss. John Allin - ; - - ; - poss. Sarah Bryan
Need research here. Were John Allin and Sarah Bryan the grandparents of 3 and were they related to our Armagh Allens? Similarity of names and places is suggestive, and like our Allens 3 was Presbyterian.

Several early Allens in Ripley Co., Indiana are probably related to each other, though they have no known ancestors. The following unnamed individual (4) is conjectural, but might even be a son of 1.1 (i.e 1.1.2 or 1.1.4).
Robert Newton Allen (our 1.1.2.5.3) passed through Ripley County. (That's where he married Elizabeth Talbott, the mother of his children.) The names make it likely that 1.1.2.2.1 = 4.2.2.
4 grandfather of Ripley Allens - ; - prob. Kentucky ; - -

12 John Allin - ; - lived in Pennsylvania ; - -
John Allin fought in the Revolutionary War. (from Lisa White.) As an early resident of Pennsylvania, he might be a nephew of Robert Allan....
13 David Allen Eire ; ca 1720 Penns? ; ca 1800 Susanna (Susan) White (b. Scotland)
David and Susan emigrated about 1740 on same vessel. Susan was prob. daughter of Robert Whyte and Agnes Hart. They settled first in Chester Co., Penns. (same county where Robert 1.1 and John 1.5 Allan first settled) and moved several years later to Fayette Co. David is shown by one site at WorldConnect as having brother William.
David Allen is also a possible nephew, again just based on the migration Eire to Chester Co. at about the same time as Robert Allan. Also, wife's Scottish birth shows this family was Scots-Irish, not Irish. As shown on these pages, there were several Irish Allens who showed up in Chester County about this time, probably not all related.

Fourth Generation
Grandchildren of Robert Allan and Deborah Montgomery

1.1.2.1 Deborah Allen Frederick Co., Virg. ; ca 1766 Shelby Co., Ky ; 1841 William Sharpe (m. 1786)
The children of Deborah and William Sharpe may be found at WorldConnect via keithm@infused.org and at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~wandabal.
1.1.2.2 Robert Polk Allen Frederick Co., Virg. ; 1767 Shelby Co., Ky. ; 16 Mar 1834 Deborah Allen (1.1.4.2)
Robert and Deborah's farm was called ``Allen Dale'' (their double in-laws, Montgomery and Martha Allen, were originally partners.) and is still located 4 miles south of Shelbyville and called ``Allen Dale Farm.'' Robert Polk Allen was Justice of the Peace.
Census shows at least ten children possibly born to Robert and Deborah; but we have names for only three and little on them.
1.1.2.3 Elizabeth Allen Frederick Co., Virg. ; 1768 Ohio Co., Ky. ; 1810 Harrison Taylor II (m. ca 1788)
Harrison Taylor II (1766-1821), a Justice of the Peace in Ohio County, was the son of Harrison Taylor and Jane Curlett. The descendants of Elizabeth and Harrison Taylor may be found at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~wandabal. One of their sons married a daughter of William Allen (1782-1857), but he is unrelated to the Allens here.
1.1.2.4 Anne (Annie) Harrison Allen Frederick Co. Virg. ; 1769 Shelby Co., KY ; 1 Sep 1825 (never married)
1.1.2.5 Martha Allen Frederick Co., Virg. ; 1772 Monroe Co., Indiana ; 1839 Montgomery Allen (1.1.4.1)
Martha and Montgomery married ca. 1793, and moved to Shelby Co., Ky. He is buried in Putnam Co., Indiana; she in Bloomington, Monroe Co.
1.1.2.6 Thomas A. Allen (Justice of Peace) Frederick Co., Virg. ; 1768 (or ca 1776) Shelby Co., Ky. ; Dec 1821 Hannah Hornsby (m. 1801)
(Hannah dau of Jos. H. Hornsby, Jr. and Mildred Thornton Walker. Hornsby established the ``Grasslands'' plantation near Simpsonville.)
1.1.2.7 John (Jack) Allen, Jr. Frederick Co. Virg. ; 1772 Shelby Co., Kentucky ; 1 Jun 1841 (or Jun 1835) Sarah Margaret Hornsby (b 17 Oct 1780)
(Sarah dau of Jos. H. Hornsby, Jr. and Mildred Thornton Walker. List of children copied from McLaurin database.)
John Allen came to Kentucky in 1794; his wife was of English descent; he was Episcopalian; he ``died in the cholera epidemic of 1835.''
1.1.2.8 Washington Allen (Justice of Peace) Frederick Co., Virg. ; 1780 - ; 28 Dec 1815 Sarah (Sally) Price (b. 20 Oct 1783 in England)
Washington Allen lives next-door to his sister and brother-in-law Wm. Sharp in 1810 Shelby census.
1.1.2.9 Catherine Allen - ; - - ; prob d. as child -
1.1.2.10 James David Allen (Colonel)Virginia ; 31 Jul 1782 Shelby Co., Kentucky ; 20 Sep 1859 Drusilla Fawcett (1787-1849), dau of Joseph and Mary
  (J. D. Allen, age 68, household of 1 in 1850 Shelby Co. census.)
1.1.2.11 Cynthia Allen - ; ca 1788 Shelby Co., Kentucky ; - Joseph Hornsby (m. ca 1810)
Joseph Hornsby was son of Joseph Hornsby and Mildred (Walker) Thornton; in other words, he was brother of the wives of his wife's brothers John and Thomas. The children of Cynthia and Joseph Hornsby may be found at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~wandabal.
1.1.3.1 Deborah Montgomery Allen - ; 27 Sep 1766 Calloway Co., Missouri ; 11 June 1842 Robert Spotswood Russell (Brig. Gen.) (1762 - 1842)
Robert Russell was son of William Russel (b. 1735), also a Brig. General, and Tabitha Adams.
Three very large lists of descendants of Robert and Deborah Russell may be found at WorldConnect via Laura W. Steneck (clwlass@mindspring.com), via Diana Shepard (ShepardDi@aol.com) and via William LaBach (wmlabach1@home.com).
Robert and Deborah Russell had a son Thomas Allen Russell (1794 - 1846) who married Anne Mastin Allen, and a daughter Rebecca Williamson Russell (1798 - 1850) who married Thomas Millar Allen (1797 - 1871). The resultant surname evolution Allen --> Russell --> Allen caused me confusion when I encountered the following note:
``A Thomas M. Allen shows up, living in Fayette Co., Kentucky and later in Boone Co., Missouri, whose sister was `Mrs. Russel' but he was alive in 1833. (He was Elder of Church of Christ. Christian Messenger placed `genealogical tidbits' on-line.)'' The same note mentioned General Russel. 1.1.3.1 is a ``Mrs. Russell'' with a brother Thomas Allen, but the dates didn't match up.
However, now we can deduce `Mrs. Russel' was Anne Mastin Allen!
Recently John M. Scroggins was kind enough to e-mail me with a pointer to information on the family of 1.1.3.2 that places Anne Mastin Allen and Thomas Millar Allen.
1.1.3.2 William Allen - ; 7 May 1769 - ; 18 Aug 1809 Sarah Meredith Scrogin
Sarah Meredith Scroggin(s) (b. ca 1778, prob. in Charles Co., Maryland; d. 10 Sept 1804) was daughter of John Scrogin III and Ann Mastin. A source shows ``Sarah Meredith'' so perhaps she was nee Meredith, widow Scroggin.
1.1.3.3 Thomas Allen - ; 27 Dec 1774 - ; 1823 Catherine Branson
Catherine Branson, b. 12 July 1785, is daughter of Lionel Branson and Rebecca Rogers.
1.1.3.4 Rebecca Allen - ; 14 June 1777 - ; 4 June 1802 William Williamson (Rev.)
1.1.3.5 David Hume Allen - ; 24 July 1781 Clark Co., Virg. ? ; 1854 Sarah Griffin Taylor, b. 1808 Virg., m. 1823,
Sarah G. Taylor was the daughter of Col. Griffin Taylor and Molly Mary McKennon. She and David Hume Allen lived at ``Clifton'', a plantation purchased in Clark Co. by Col. Griffin Taylor. The mansion at Clifton was erected in 1842 by David Hume Allen. (Information on this family courtesy of Ray Isbell.)
1.1.3.6 Robert Millar Allen Shenandoah Co., Virg. ; 16 Jan 1790 Warren Co., Virg. ; 14 May 1819 Rebecca Branson (1793 - 1853; m. 1816)
1.1.3.7 Joseph Allen Shenandoah Co., Virg. ; 23 Feb 1784 - ; 12 Sep 1815 -
1.1.3.8 Robert Allen - ; 2 Aug 1771 - ; 23 Apr 1788 -
1.1.3.9 James Allen - ; 14 Dec 1773 - ; 4 Jan 1774 -
1.1.4.1 Montgomery Allen - ; 1766 Putnam Co., Indiana ; 1835 Martha Allen (1.1.2.5)
1.1.4.2 Deborah Allen - ; 1767 Shelby Co., Ky. ; 18 Jun 1841 Robert Polk Allen (1.1.2.2)
1.1.4.3 Martha Ann Allen - ; - - ; - Arthur Patterson (m. 1798)
There is an Arthur Patterson next-door to 1.1.4.2 and 1.1.2.2 in 1810 Shelby census.
1.1.4.4 Anna Allen - ; - - ; - Sharp
1.1.4.5 Mary Allen - ; - - ; - Hornsby
1.1.4.6 Elizabeth Allen - ; - - ; - Taylor
1.1.4.7 Nancy Allen - ; - Shelby Co., KY ; - (never married)
1.1.4.8 Sarah Allen - ; - - ; - Prendergast
poss. 1.1.4.9 Robert Allen - ; - - ; - Jane
This son of 1.1.4 is reported (according to William and Loydean Allen) on page 491 of Scots-Irish Settlements in Virginia by Lyman and Chalkey. This seems probably wrong; he seems to be mistaken for 7.1.2 on the Other Allen chart?
1.1.5.1 Robert Allen Augusta Co., Virg. ; 1763 Green Co., Ky. ; 1809 Maria (Polly) McElroy (m. 1797), Nancy Ann Barrett, and/or Eliza Allen.
1.1.5.2 John Crook Allen Albemarle Co., Virg. ; 1765 Greensburg, Ky. ; 1808 Margaret Moore (m. 1787), dau of William Moore.
1.1.5.3 James Joseph Allen (Brig. Gen.) Albemarle Co., Virg. ; 1769 - ; 10 Dec 1836 Eliza (Elizabeth; Mary Eliza) McElroy (m. 1795)
James Joseph Allen was the first lawyer in Greensburg Ky. He was a distinguished scholar. He was Brigadier General in War of 1812. He and his siblings Mary and David were apparently still minors on the death of 1.1.5 and became wards of 1.1.4.
1.1.5.4 James Joseph Allen (Brig. Gen.) Albemarle Co., Virg. ; 1769 - ; 10 Dec 1836 Ann (Nancy) Barrett
I had some doubt about this connection, but DNA tests confirm that the descendants of this marriage share Robert Allen's Y-chromosome.
1.1.5.5 James Joseph Allen (Brig. Gen.) Albemarle Co., Virg. ; 1769 - ; 10 Dec 1836 Eliza Allen
1.1.5.6 Thomas Allen - ; 1770 - ; 1779 or 1787 (never married)
1.1.5.7 Mary Allen Albemarle Co., Virg. ; 1772 - ; - Samuel Moore
1.1.5.8 David Allen, Jr. (Capt. in War of 1812) Albemarle Co., Virg. ; 1774 Green Co., Ky. ; 14 Nov 1817 Martha (Patsy) Todd Barrett
Martha Barrett was born 28 Oct 1782, married 1801, died 20 Mar 1816.
1.1.5.9 Benjamin Allen - ; 1776 - ; 1779 or 1787 (never married)
Grandchildren of Robert Allan and Sarah Cathey
1.2.1.1 Robert Mark Allen Frederick Co., Virg ; 1772 Casey Co., Kentucky ; 1828 Nancy Christenson
Nancy Christenson (1773-1839; m. 1798) was daughter of Robert Christenson and Mary James.
1.2.1.2 John Allen Botetourt Co., Virginia ; 1774 Scott Co., Ill. ; aft. 1840 Elinor Lynch (m. 1790) and Esther NN and poss. Lucy Drummond (b. 1793)
It is not known who was the mother of John Allen's (1.2.1.2) children. Sources that show Elinor Lynch as wife show 1828 as death year. Only one correspondent (William Dale Allen) has emerged showing descent from 1.2.1.2; descendants of John Allen are copied from his records.
John and his brothers Thomas and Samuel moved from Casey Co., KY to Morgan Co., Ill. ca 1820.
prob. not 1.2.1.3 John Allen Botetourt Co., Virginia ; 1774 Coche, Tennessee ; 1828 Nancy Maddox (Mattox)
It seems that two John Allen's have been confused. For now, we show this one as child of 1.2.1, as does another source, even though that is almost certainly wrong.
Nancy Maddox is daughter of Valentine Maddox and Mary (Polly) Shrewsbury.
1.2.1.4 Sarah (Sally) Wohoab Allen Virginia ; 1776 Kentucky ; 1806 Job Sweeney (m. 1789)
1.2.1.5 James Green ``John'' Allen Botetourt Co., Virginia ; 7 Oct 1779 Casey Co., KY ; 1 July 1864 Frances Flowers (Fannie) Jones
Frances Jones (b. 1791, m. 1810) was daughter of Zadock Jones and Elizabeth Flowers. The Jones family was originally from Delaware.
1.2.1.6 Thomas Allen Frederick Co., Virg ; 16 June 1781 Adair Co., Missouri ; aft. 23 Dec 1859 Sarah Christerson

Jane Logan, m. 19 Oct 1799, may have been daughter of General Benjamin Logan (1742 - 1802) and Ann Montgomery. (Unless two different Jane Logans married two different John Allens) Ann Montgomery was daughter of the famous pioneer William Montgomery, ancestor of Mark Twain.
John Allen came to Kentucky age 8; Legislator, State Senator, associate counsel for Aaron Burr. He is the eponym of Allen County, Kentucky.
This Colonel John Allen is identified as a ``cousin of the Allen Dale Allens'' by Van Stockum; his four daughters litigated against the Allen Dale Allens.

3 James (Jimmie) Allen Rowan Co., N.C. ; 1785 Putman Co., IN ; 1837 Delilah Wright
James Allen, Presbyterian, homesteaded 1808 Washington Co., Indiana. Some sources show his marriage 1804 in Rowan Co., others 1810 in Washington Co. He lived in Greencastle, Putnam Co.
Based on very fragmentary data, the following AT might be guessed for this James Allen: 1. James Allen; 2. prob. Thomas Allin; 3. poss. Margery Bryan; 4. prob. John Allin; 5. poss. Sarah Bryan; 10. John Bryan b. 9 Apr 1730, Shenandoah Co. Virg. John Bryan has a pedigree shown at Ancestry.com WorldTree which shows descent from Ireland and France via Denmark.
Presbyterian with ancestor from Ireland and Shenandoah Valley! Sure seems a likely relative. If so, he is not the only relative from North Carolina branch that later met up with Kentucky branch in Putnam or Monroe County, Indiana.
There was also a Daniel Allen born in Rowan Co., NC about the same time as this 4. John Allin.
The AT of Delilah Wright is allegedly: 1. Delilah Wright (b. 20 May 1782; d. 15 July 1869) 2. Richard Wright, Jr. (4 July 1757 - 12 May 1833) 3. Nancy/Mary Morgan (1760-1798) 4. Richard Wright (1730 - 3 Sept 1784) 5. Elizabeth `Jane' Ann Morgan (1732-1795
A very large genealogy showing descendants of James Allen (3) can be found at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~herbarkin (Wright family). Again, however, there is no clue as to the parents of 3.

The composition of this household is unknown, but it seems certain Burl was one of the young males; he was son of Sarah. Wilford was probably Burl's brother. I suspect the older male was Montgomery; where was Merit?

1.1.2.2.1
(prob. not 4.2.2)
James W. Allen - ; - - ; - Rosilini (?) Covington
James W. Allen may have been the only surviving son of Robert P. Allen, who left him his entire estate.
LDS shows a James W. Allen (b. 2 Dec 1802 Ky; d. 28 Feb 1866 Morgan Co., Ill.) who married Rosaline Corington (m. 6 July 1834 Bourbon Co., Ky) daughter of Joel Corrington and Mary Ellen Nichols.
There is a household, James and Rosilla Allen, in the 1850 Ripley Co. census; see 4.2.2. The idea that 1.1.2.2.1 is one of the Ripley Co. Allens has another supporting hint: Wilford Allen of Ripley had a son James W. Allen. (In neither case do we know yet what the ``W.'' stands for.)
Two Covingtons appear in 1820 and 1830 Indiana census, both in Dearborn County (which is adjacent to Ripley Co). Thomas C. Covington (b. 1787 Somerset, MD) m. Polly Nichols in 1819. Robert E. Covington (b. 1789 Cumberland Co., PA) m. Mary Fulton in 1819. (By 1830 Robert was apparently dead, Mary appearing in census.) Note that the grandmother of 1.1.2.2.1 was raised in Cumberland County.
There were seventeen Covington households in the 1820 Kentucky census. Help! Help! How will we find Rosilini?

According to Kathleen McCraw, this third wife was Eliza Jane Henderson, son was Robert Montgomery, and two other infants were born. However, a Monroe County legal document Phyllis Ewer located shows John W. Allen's son Robert with middle initial "A." and as son of Marth Ann Givens.

Linnie Allen is daughter of John Allen (d. ca 1838) and Elizabeth Boswell, both born Maryland, married in Nelson County, moving to Shelby County, later Spencer Co. (all Kentucky) and finally to Boone Co., Indiana.
Linnie was included in this list by mistake, but I'll leave these note: the genealogical error is likely to be repropagated.
Was Linnie's father John Allen nevertheless a cousin? Perhaps. Their children: Sarah (Sally), Christina (Teny), Andrew, Priscilla, Linnie, Nancy, Elizabeth, John Boswell, and Angeline don't sound like our Armagh Allens, but then neither do the children of 1.4.1.2 or 1.4.1.3.

The following persons (cousins?) are likely related. Where do they fit in? Burl was definitely son of Sarah Allen, who appears as head of household in 1820 Ripley census (and dies ca 1822). Wilford is probably Burl's brother.
In the 1840 census, James (tentatively called 4.2.2) is adjacent to Montgomery (4.1.1) with Merit (4.2.1) four lines below. Wilford was three pages earlier.
In the 1850 census, James and Rosilla are on page 234 along with a John Allen household. Merit, Montgomery and Burrill are all on page 233.

4.3.1 Burl Allen Virg. ; ca 1806 Missouri? ; after 1871 Ann Adamson, b ca 1817 Indiana, m. 1837 LaPorte Co.
Burrill Allen appears in 1850 Ripley Co. census as 45-year old laborer unable to read and write. Other spelling variations include Burrel, Burrill, Burval.

Adamson is a relatively uncommon surname. In the 1810 census there is no Adamson in Virginia, and in Kentucky only Mason Co. has Adamson households. (Parts of Bracken Co. were formerly in Mason Co.)

From Robert P. Allen's will: ``... it is my will that [Robert Henry Allen, my grandson] shall be furnished with a horse saddle and bridle worth eighty dollars when of age or sooner if necessary. I wish him to study medicine under his uncle Joseph W. Knight.''
Regarding the following children of Robert N. Allen: Robert N. Jr. and James M. showed up first in NSDAR records. Then I found seven children in 1850 Putnam Co. census. I also located this family in 1830 Putnam Co. census, with a young daughter who does not appear in 1850 census.

(There is a confusing indication of another child, Howell, possibly d. as infant.)

In 1850 census of Putnam Co., Indiana, there is a household of ``Joseph Allen'' next-door to the household of Robert N. Allen (1.1.2.5.3). Joseph and Robert were probably cousins. The only unaccounted cousin Joseph in our records is (1.1.2.7.2), supposedly a Doctor. (In the 1850 census, occupation of then 38-year old Joseph is left blank.) There is a 24-year old Sarah A. Allen (born Indiana) in that Joseph Allen household, probably a second wife. Following are eight children shown in that household.
Since I wrote the above note, I found (1.1.2.7.2) shown by Rex McLaurin as born 1815, so this must be a different Joseph Allen. I'll leave the ``children'' here for now, till we identify this Joseph.

In 1850 census of Shelby Co., Kentucky, there is a household with 42-year old Joseph and five others of widely varying age including 2-year old Drusilla. With Joseph's age matching and name Drusilla, this is probably 1.1.2.10.2. (Joseph is known to have had three wives; hence the wide range of ages, but was Eliza Jane a child or wife? Note also that Thomas was listed last in the census, with others in age order.)

4.1.1.1 John Allen Ripley Co., Indiana ; 22 Jun 1822 Champaign Co., Illinois ; 23 Jul 1907 Emily Caroline Sprague
Emily Sprague (b. 1824 in New Hampshire; m. 21 Dec 1842; d. March 1870) was daughter of John Sprague and Elizabeth Hildreth. List of agnatic descendants of Emily and John Allen copied from Sprague database.
4.1.1.2 John Allen Ripley Co., Indiana ; 22 Jun 1822 Champaign Co., Illinois ; 23 Jul 1907 Mercy Jane Miller
Mercy Jane Miller (m. John 4 Oct 1871 in Ripley Co.) was widow of John's brother James -- per Ray Novak.
Some sources show 4.1.1 with two sons, John and James. Other sources show him with two sons, John and Montgomery. I have deduced that James and Montgomery must have been the same person, presumably named, in full, James Montgomery Allen.
From Ray Novak we have: James Allen married Mercy Jane Miller; their children are Edward, Mary, Sadie, Flora B., George. He also shows the husband of Flora B.
From Judith Hesselberth we have: Montgomery Allen married Mary Jane Miller; their children are James E. (1852-), Florence, Sarah Ann (1860-1931), George W. She also shows the husband of Sarah Ann.
The 1860 Ripley County census shows Montgomery Allen (age 31) living with Mercy J. (25?), James E. (4 or 7), Mary F. (4), Sarah A. (2 months), all born in Indiana (though elsewhere Mary Jane Miller is shown born in Bavaria, Germany.)
4.1.1.3 James Montgomery Allen Ripley Co., Indiana ; 1829 Ripley Co., Indiana ; 1867 Mercy (Mary) Jane Miller
(He is shown only as ``James'' or as ``Montgomery [Jr.].'' The assumption that this was one man with this full name is mine -- J.D.A.)
Mercy (Mary) Jane Miller was born ca 1836 and died 1894; she was the daughter of John C. Miller of Bavaria, Germany and Susanna.

Earlier I showed John Allen as possibly marrying Dona Martha Butcher, daughter of Eli Butcher (1818-1898) and Elvira Jane Givens (1826-1911). My mistake. That was John Clarence Allen, son of (unrelated?) Thomas J. Allen. (We already have possible candidate for Elvira: 1.3.1.12.9 in Givens chart.)

4.1.1.3.4 Florence (Flora B.?) Allen - ; - - ; - Ed Jackson
Judith Hesselberth shows Florence marrying Ed Jackson. This is surely correct: she even has photographs.

Another source shows Flora B. Allen (dau of 4.1.1.3) marrying Stephen Douglas Jackson 26 Sep 1876. Yet another source shows a Stephen Douglas Jackson (1872 - 1965) of Louisiana marrying a Flora B. Allen (1876 - 1969) with Flora's birthdate same as marriage date above! Thus, the connection from S.D. Jackson's Flora B. to our Allens appears likely to be an error based on similarity of names.

Tenth Generation
6-Great Grandchildren of Robert Allan

To avoid compromising their privacy, I provide few or no details of living individuals, and thus make no attempt to continue this list to the tenth generation or beyond.

My name's no secret, so I'll create an entry for me:

1.1.2.5.7.1.1.2.1.2
1.1.4.1.7.1.1.2.1.2
James Dow Allen, III ``So long ago I don't remember.'' ``I never plan that far ahead.'' Mommy Bear, the most wonderful wife and mother in the world.

Eleventh Generation
7-Great Grandchildren of Robert Allan

... And I cannot resist boasting that Robert Allan and Deborah Montgomery have at least one 7-great grandson of purely agnatic descent.

Allen - Dow

I searched at some genealogical indexes for last name `Allen', middle name `Dow'. Five 19th-century individuals turned up, including the Edwin Dow Allen shown as 5 in the main table above. The other four? Though they appeared unrelated to each other (or to me) all four were named ``Lorenzo Dow Allen.'' Two of the four had maternal grandfathers also forenamed ``Lorenzo Dow.'' (Later I read that 20,000 children were named after Lorenzo Dow (1777 - 1834), a famous Methodist evangelist in the South.)
